Need A Gift Idea?
Christmas is right around the corner, so I thought I’d give you a heads up on some great gift ideas specially suited for your creative and unique daughter. For starters, consider getting her a subscription to one of Focus on the Family’s fantastic magazines. Brio is a wonderful publication for teenage girls, while Club House is terrific for ages 8-12. My girls look forward to each issue, gaining insight and perspective from helpful articles and features. I’d also like to recommend, Plugged In, for older teens and parents looking to stay informed about trends in media, film, music, and literature. To find out more about useful resources, go to: www.family.org - and enjoy!

Senior Ragamuffin members have been busy memorizing lines and working on stage direction for our upcoming production, The Anastasis, which will be featured at the Charlevoix Assembly of God Church on the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th of November. For those of you who did not see our original presentation 5 years ago, The Anastasis is a gripping spiritual allegory inspired by the bravery and courage of Cassie Burnall, a high school student who fell victim of the tragic 1999 Columbine shootings in Littleton Colorado. Cassie’s heroic faith in God, along with countless others throughout history who have refused to deny Christ in the face of death, serve as the inspiration behind this powerfully moving portrayal of unwavering faith. Theirs is the testimony of “those whom the world was not worthy,” for they loved not their lives even to the point of death. (Hebrews 11) I sat stunned and devastated by the news of yet another horrific high school shooting. The town of Littleton was not far from us in Colorado Springs, and the reality of it all hit far too close to home. As the tragic events of that fateful day began to unfold, I found myself asking the hard question, “What would I have done?” In a moment, Cassie Burnall was put to the test - a test that none of us would ever want to take, yet found within her heart the courage to stay true to both herself and her God. Her answer gained her entrance into the Hall of Fame in God’s book, and in mine. That is why we chose her name for the main character of The Anastasis - a character who battles evil forces of darkness, and like Cassie, finds strength through her personal relationship to stand true when tested. Musically compelling, intriguing, unpredictable & inescapable, The Anastasis will captivate and challenge audience members to ask the tough questions concerning their belief in God. I encourage you to make a point of coming, & to use it as an opportunity to invite family, neighbors, co-workers and friends.
These past few weeks we have been focusing on combining our skills in acting, with modern dance. I’m really impressed with the work the girls have done, and am looking forward to building on our foundation of movement through dance by introducing more advanced concepts. Some of the areas we have been covering include: rhythmic patterns in transitions, and the use of groupings or tableaux in choreography. I’ll be teaching the girls to look at dance from the perspective of a director, or choreographer so that they can recognize and contribute necessary elements in the creative process. This in turn makes them a better dancer! I’ll be putting together a new show featuring Modern Dance pieces to the music of Star Wars, Jungle Book, Lord of the Rings, Hook, Mulan, Edward Scissor Hands, and much much more!
Willy Wonka’s Favorite Flying Grampa
I invited one of our talented Senior Ragamuffin’s, Christina to write a few words about her experience playing Grampa Joe in Willy Wonka. Here’s what she had to say.

Just as the Bible says, “The body is a unit, though it is made up of different parts,” and so it was with our production of Willy Wonka. I’m always amazed at how God seems to fit everyone of us into our own special part, even if for me it meant taking on the role of an Irish grandfather! I couldn’t help but notice that as we each transformed into our various sweet-toothed characters, we also represented a picture of
the body of Christ, weaved together in our various roles. God had given each of us, as artist, mom, audience member, or character - a different gift to use according to the measure of faith He had given to us. As Ragamuffin Theatre approaches a new season where abundant blessings and changed lives await us, we must always remember how significant each one of us is to God, and how He desires to use the gifts He placed in us for His good, pleasing, and perfect will. Through the process of being molded and rooted in Ragamuffins, my eyes have been opened, allowing me to see clearly the many ways God wants to use me. He so delights and blesses us, His ragged children, for dedicating our time and effort into His Kingdom. From “muffins” to “fake mustaches” to “lasting memories,” it all leads back to us living and loving as His body - unique and special, each part created to do God’s will in a way that only you or I can. And in the end, we will all stand amazed at what He does both in and through us!

(Thank you Christina! We appreciate you reminding us of our unique significance in the body of Christ. To God there are no unimportant parts! We are all precious to Him.)

On September 29th, our graduate flew the coop! I’ve now joined the league of moms and dads who have felt both elation and loss while packing their child’s bags in preparation for their life long journey of independence. Brittni’s flight took her all the way to Hawaii, where she has enrolled as a student in Youth With A Mission’s University of the Nations in Kona. Her studies will be focused on strengthening her faith while equipping her for her field assignment to China this December. She was accepted into a performing arts DTS, and is taking classes in all areas of creative expression. She has already learned several words in Korean, as many of her roommates come from that nation. If you would like to keep in touch with her, you can email her at: tracksta61@hotmail.com or write to her at:

I’m thinking it’s time to dazzle our audiences with another heartwarming presentation or two of A Little Princess. Just want to give you a heads up as to what might be the plan. I’m hoping that we can secure a few days after Christmas (during our break) at Castle Farms. I know that some of you might be out of town, but I think it may be a great time for others, and especially the girls. People are usually looking for something to do after Christmas, and we are just the right solution. As soon as I secure the Castle, we could begin selling tickets, which incidentally would make a great Christmas gift! We will also plan on selling t-shirts that say, “Every Girl is a Princess” along with other Ragamuffin gear. Please let me know if your daughter will be able to participate so that I can prepare appropriately for the roles. You can email me at: Ragamuffintheatre@charter.net, or call me at home. Our number is 231-237-9686. Remember, it’s always polite to contact me when your child cannot attend a training session so that I know where she is!

From the Director’s Chair
We are living in a time when most parents allow their children to view what used to be considered, “Adult Content” on their television sets each night. I want to encourage you to continue in your fight against the exploitation of your child’s mind by carefully screening the programs they watch. Preserving their innocence is a task assigned to you by God, and we must diligently seek His guidance as we raise our girls to be strong, pure, and undefiled. Keep up the Fight - You’re Not Alone!
